At the turn of the century Harland & Wolff was the largest shipyard on the planet. To those that worked there it must have seemed like a town all on its own in the middle of Dublin. It was here that the Titanic was built; and nothing was done on a small scale, and nothing was left to chance. The shipyard had the largest gantry in the world where two ships could be built side by side - those ships were the Olympic and the Titanic, followed by the Gigantic, er, the Britannic.
Harland & Wolff also had the largest graving dock and drydock. They were needed for the largest ships on Earth. These were not the only details being handled by the shipyard; there were orders for chrystalwear, wood carvings, fine china and elevators.
